Power Supply for an Optical Medium
Canadian Intellectual Property Office, Patent Document Number 2372389
POWER SUPPLY FOR AN INTELLIGENT OPTICAL MEDIUM AND METHOD FOR SAME
BLOC D'ALIMENTATION POUR UN SUPPORT OPTIQUE INTELLIGENT ET METHODE CONNEXE
CLAIMS:
What is claimed is:
1. An electrical generating apparatus built-in an optical recording medium comprising a first substrate with a center mounting hole and having top and bottom surfaces; a prerecorded area wherein user data is provided and adapted to be read from at least one of said surfaces of first substrate; and a second substrate with a center mounting hole and having top and bottom surfaces, cooperating with first layer, having one surface comprising means for one or a combination of energy collection, energy converting and energy storage means, ...., thereby converting collected energy to electrical energy to energize surface mounted hardware on one or plural surface.
Emerging technologies by other inventors
Today's CDs are simple passive storage mediums. Future CDs will have their own processors on-board with microchips integrated into their substrate layers. With a new emerging generation of dynamic CDs, a power supply is required to energize the various functions asked from an exciting range of new applications.
For example, in a new invention a CD is being used as a medical lab.
"This medical diagnostic CD works like a centrifuge. The fluids cross the optical sensor at the edge of the disk from the outermost reservoir inward. The size of the channels and the speed at which the disk spins determine how fast the fluids move."

In another invention, a CD having its own CPU pre-processes data sent to the computer, thus expanding the CD's capacity to 8 GB.
